THE LYING OF LIFE IN THE PAINTING OF MEJAN

by Josep M. Cadena

Mejan, through his sensitivity to capture the color of virgin land, conveys the magnificence of the natural environment and offers the tremor of a few moments in which the painter’s gaze is a scalpel that pierces the skin of reality and discovers the feelings that they animate The paintings he has done again for this exhibition at the Rusiñol hall in Sant Cugat del Vallés, where he exhibits the skill of an artist who is easy to make known what is transcendental, is a broad path for our spirits to travel with joy towards the reunion of the concept of beauty that drives the harmony of forms.

Mejan’s painting is one of the best practical demonstrations that the old controversy between figuration and abstraction is overcome, since his works show that the first must not disappear in order to enjoy the second. His pictorial works, which appeal to both the senses and intelligence, capture the gradations of the greens, blues and reds of Nature, the undulations that the wind establishes on the sown fields, and the movements of the waves, the sea and great lakes. According to the theme of the landscape, the painter captures what he sees, but at the same time he projects himself inside each theme and extracts feelings that come to us. In this way, his work becomes a living experience.

Estimating the painting, when it is as sincere and open as that which Mejan presents to us in this exhibition, is easy and natural. Contrarieties surround us, and both the problems closest to us and those that seem more distant but that global globalization makes us end up affecting us, create us worries. But when we contemplate the pictorial works that we now have within reach, we feel a plastic version of the spiritual Cant of Joan Maragall that begins with the verses If the world is already so beautiful, Lord, if you look / with your peace inside our eye, What else can you give us in another life? This is so because Mejan’s chromatic poetry, simple and complex at the same time, spontaneous and as a whole, the daughter of intense meditation, makes us feel the beat of life.
